Things To Remember When Buying Office Furniture

Posted by Sandy Gold on Sep 3rd, 2010

Designing and furnishing an office, whether it’s in your home or elsewhere, can be a daunting task, but it should be given plenty of thought. You spend most of business hours there, and you may also get visits from colleagues and clients in your office. Purchasing office furniture and giving your work space a comfortable, professional look is an investment in your work.

Prior to furniture shopping, one should try to make a list of all the items that your office will need. Without an idea of what furniture is essential for your work space, you may end up overspending and buying things you don’t need, which will give your office a cluttered feel. Even before deciding what furniture to buy, one should be sure to consider the following questions.

How many people are going to share the space with you? Do you plan on having visitors, or will there be someone working there with you every day? If you think about this before shopping for furniture, you’ll know how many desks and chairs to purchase, and you can also plan how much empty space the room can have.

One should also consider how much paperwork will be done in the office. Knowing whether you work more by computer of on paper can indicate how many filing cabinets will be required. It can also have an effect on the optimal size of your desk. A person who does most work on the computer can save space and purchase a relatively small desk, leaving more empty room in the office. A person who works with a lot of paper in front of them, on the other hand, should purchase a desk large enough to accommodate plenty of paper, files, folders and so on.

It’s also helpful to think about the sort of office supplies you’ll need to accommodate – phone, fax, copier, printer and so on. You may have a printer for your personal use, in which case you’ll want a desk that can comfortably fit your printer. Alternatively, you might be sharing the printer with others in the office, so you’d want a separate table or shelf for the printer where everyone can get to it.

Even if you work at home, setting aside and furnishing some room (like a basement, guest room, or library) can be a worthwhile endeavor. Once it is furnished as an office space, you may find it easier to focus and work there. Without such a space, often people are easily distracted and procrastinate because there is too tenuous a boundary between home and work.

Modular office sets are becoming increasingly popular. Available in natural wood colors as well as black, white, honey and so on, modular furniture can even be customized to fit the spaces of the room that you designate for specific furniture.

Generally, any office needs chairs, a desk, bookshelves and filing cabinets or something to store papers in. You can further personalize an office with decorations and plants, making it a more enjoyable space for you and visitors to be in. Having a plan early on that articulate essential items and their ideal sizes can make furnishing your office much more convenient and beneficial.

Review: ‘The American’ misses the mark

Posted by on Sep 2nd, 2010

George Clooney’s new thriller “The American” takes itself very seriously. Not the bait-and-switch seriousness you would find in a Jason Bourne movie, where “realism” is just a camera style; and not the op-ed seriousness we get from “Michael Clayton,” or “Syriana”, where liberalism makes a pact with entertainment. No, this is a different register altogether: a hit-man movie concerned purely with …
